Screening of The Pipe
The Pipe charts the battle between the tiny village of Rossport and the Oil Giant Shell. This controversial new documentary by first time filmmaker Risteard Ó Domhnaill has won critical acclaim internationally, and will be shown at Knighton Methodist Church on Friday 17th June, 7.30 pm with a short discussion afterwards.
No tickets but donations towards costs are requested.
May 14th Plant and Seedling Swap at the Farmers’ Market, Knighton Community Centre
Previous events have included a free film festival which had screenings of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth outlining the case for climate change resulting from man’s excessive use of fossil fuels. Around 50 people turned out to see the film and a lively discussion both for and against ensued.
The Power of Community, a film from Cuba showed how the country coped when its oil imports were halved almost overnight. With a future with less rather than more fossil fuels there were some inspirational lessons to be learnt.
What are We Waiting For was a short but precise film from Greenpeace showing how two-thirds of the energy we use in the UK is wasted. And how solutions such as localised energy are already well tried and tested.
One of the most succesful events was Affordable Warmth Days where 140 people received advice on energy efficient lighting and high performance heating.
Bradford’s kindly lent a showroom in 2007 for the Teme Valley Energy Centre. The Enegy Centre is now a regular stall at Knighton’s Local Market.
Also at the Local Market are regular seed and seedling/plant swops and, in season, a Zero Miles Stall where spare locally grown produce can be sold.
Through HES the group has encouraged Community Carbon Footprinting in the area.
This year at Meet the Teme Martin Golder of Calon Cymru gave a presentation of how the charity aims to create a green corridor along the Heart of Wales railway line.
